How to choose the right e-liquid for you

My Vape Box with e-liquid explaining how to choose for your e-cigarette device

With literally thousands of different e-liquids available it can be overwhelming to try and find the correct one for you.

First off, what is e-liquid made of? E-liquid typically has 4 ingredients:

  • Propylene Glycol (known as PG)
  • Vegetable Glycerin (known as VG)
  • Flavourings
  • And usually, but not always, nicotine

Here are the main topics we’re going to discuss in this blog to help you decide which e-liquid is best for you.

  • The ratio of PG to VG
  • The amount of nicotine in the e-liquid
  • The flavours that are available

The ratio of PG to VG in e-liquids

The base of any e-liquid is made from PG and VG. The ratio of PG to VG is often displayed on bottles of e-liquid as shown in the picture below.

A liquid with a higher PG content will normally have a more powerful throat hit. That is the feeling more typically associated with smoking a traditional cigarette. PG also vaporises at a slightly lower temperature than VG and is considered by many vapers to deliver more flavour.

A liquid with a higher VG content feels smoother and produces much less of a throat hit. Also, it produces more vapor making larger clouds, which can be fun!

If you are an existing smoker using e-cigarettes to help you quit smoking, to start with we’d recommend trying an e-liquid with a PG:VG ratio of 50:50. E-liquid with this ratio will give you a throat hit most similar to tobacco cigarettes. However, if you find the throat hit it too strong and would prefer a smoother throat feel, you could then try a higher VG liquid, for examples a 70:30 or 80:20 ratio.

The nicotine strength of an e-liquid is sometime shown in percentages but it is usually shown in milligrams per millilitre. The nicotine content also affects the throat hit as discussed earlier. The higher the nicotine content, the more powerful the throat hit.

The most commonly available nicotine strengths are:

  • 3mg/ml (Low strength)
  • 6mg/ml (Low strength)
  • 12mg/ml; (Medium strength)
  • 18mg/ml (High strength)

A single traditional cigarette contains somewhere between 10mg and 20mg but your body only absorbs about 1 mg of that. The amount of nicotine you get while vaping greatly depends on how much vapour your device is producing.

As a general rule the smaller the device the less vapour it will produce. For example if you’re using a cig-a-like device or a similar small device 12mg is probably fine but if you’re using a more advanced, powerful device like a box mod device 6mg might be a better fit. The important thing is to adjust your nicotine strength to whatever feels right for you and that might take a bit of trial and improvement.
